Ken Fairclough
Ken Fairclough is an environment concept artist working in the game industry where he is currently working at Bioware's Austin location. He has worked on projects such as Star Citizen and Mass Effect Andromeda.

COURSE OUTLINE
This class will showcase current practices in the environment concept art production pipeline with emphasis on the use of 3d. The use of 3d in concept art has become increasingly necessary as games continually increase in visual fidelity. Utilizing a combination 3d modeling and rendering software along with traditional methods of painting and photo-bashing a concept artist can create high-quality images in which designs are fully realized from all angles. This process opens up new opportunities of working collaboratively with environment artists and level designers as concept models can easily be imported into game engines to further iterate on.
Week 1 - 2: Style Guide, Thumbnails, & Block Outs
Gather reference, iterate on your ideas through thumbnailing and then immediately transfer those into 3D blocks up with basic lighting and cameras established
Week 2 - 4: Establishing Levels Of Detail
Explore the different ways you can establish more structure and details in your piece. At this stage you are really looking to explore the design language established in your Style Guide
Week 5 - 6: Camera, Lights, Action!
Take your 3D to the next level using Keyshot and other applications to give you great real-world materials and lighting to work with. Make the most out of 3D before using your 2D skills to final the images!
Week 7 - 8: Paint, Paint, Paint
Now it's time to put your 2D painting skills into practice! Utilizing all the render passes and a variety of painting tricks and workflows you'll add atmosphere, details and really plus your edge work.
Week 9 - 10: Final Crits
Get your work ready for portfolio review and for entry into the game industry! You've worked hard. Now it's time to work harder!
