In this course, Ed Steckley teaches you how to capture the fundamental essence of your subject by demonstrating proven strategies he uses in production every day.

This Caricature and Digital Coloring course will consist of ten weeks of LIVE demonstrations and reviews. You'll learn core artist skills and be part of a community of artists all working to achieve next level quality in their work.

Most importantly, you'll learn how to leverage Photoshop CC and learn the professional workflows to create a portfolio ready caricature that will impress.

What you'll learn


In this course, students will create witty caricatures using Photoshop CC, Adobe Illustrator, Corel Painter, and ArtRage Studio Pro. The course will cover drawing and portrait basics, stylization and communication skills, and sketching and digital coloring techniques. The course will help students better understand illustration and artistic workflows, as well as the varied career paths available to a caricature artists.

  • Facial features and their relationships, and how this pertains to likeness
  • Manipulating facial features to our caricature's advantage

WEEK 3

Beyond the Face
  • Caricature beyond the face: The figure as caricature
  • Thinking about our caricatures three-dimensionally / Delve further into anatomy and perspective
 

WEEK 4

Gestures
  • Caricature gesture drawing
  • Beginning a polished caricature project based on a previous lesson
     

WEEK 5

Photoshop & Colors
  • Photoshop elements to refine our caricature illustration
  • Color theory and uses in relation to a caricature
     

WEEK 6

Essence of a Subject
  • Using caricature in illustration
  • Choosing a new caricature subject and looking beyond to discover the essence of a subject
 

WEEK 7

Story Telling
  • Using multiple references and studies to create a caricature
  • What story is our caricature telling?

WEEK 8

Quick Sketch
  • Learning about 'quick sketch' caricatures
  • Begin final project - a caricature illustration

About your Instructor

Ed Steckley

Ed Steckley is a Reuben Award winning illustrator in New York City, specializing in humorous illustration for magazines, children books, product packaging and advertising.

He’s a regular contributor to Mad Magazine, also Spinmaster Toys, Abrams Books, more ad agencies than he’d care to shake a stick at, and has had artwork in galleries around the country.

He is a member of the National Cartoonists Society, the Society of Illustrators and the International Society of Caricature Artists. Ed’s also currently the President of the Manhattan chapter of the National Cartoonist Society.

He enjoys talking in the third person, but won’t during class.

When is the live session?
SATURDAYS at 10 AM Pacific / 1 PM Eastern

When is the first class session?

What if I miss a class? Can I download it later?
Yes, everything is recorded and downloadable.

How long do I have access to the material?
You have access to the course material for two weeks after the end of the course.  A total of 12 weeks.

How long are the live sessions?
The live sessions are between two and three hours long.

When do you get the downloads up?
We get the downloads of live sessions online about 24 to 48 hours after the live session ends.

How do I talk to the teacher?
You can talk freely during the class and also via the Workplace group and private forum.

Will I be able to ask questions?
Yes.

Are there demonstrations or lectures?
Yes. They will be live and recorded. All downloads will be in your course.
