Deep Dive Into Your Game Art Career

deep dive gai job student work May 23, 2018

Hey there. Ryan here. :)

I'm super pumped and want to share some great news I got over the weekend:

One of our Game Artist students just got hired. :)

When Todd started the Bootcamp in March, he had been working as a texture artist in the film and TV industries for a while. But he wanted to transition into Games.

Now, just two months later, Todd is going to be a senior-level artist at a VR/AR startup. (Have I told you how pumped I am for him?) He hasn't even finished the Bootcamp yet. He's only just over the halfway mark!

The Bootcamp helped Todd reach his goal. But the Bootcamp can't take the credit.

It was Todd who put the work in. It was Todd who dove into his work.

Not only did he dive, he dove deep.

Take a look for yourself. This is the prop that he created during the first Sprint:

Todd's attention to the details is amazing. He took an ordinary fire pump and added specific elements -- spots of rust, chipping paint, torn labels, dented sides -- that bring...

It's All About the Story

story student progress Mar 21, 2018

Have you ever hit a plateau in your art? Everything you do just makes it incrementally but not THAT much better?

I've seen and experienced it so many times...

What I want you to consider in this article is that Skill is only one part of the equation.

The part I want you to think about now is something you may not have thought much about before.

In fact, it's easy for us to forget this. After all, we have to be so focused on developing the skills and the techniques while we're learning all the software and making sure we understand all of the hardcore artistic concepts we need to understand, right?  That stuff is hard enough.

But this one thing can change your art if you do it.

What is this one thing?

Tell a Story.

That's it. Just tell a story with everything you do.

One of my students, Johannes, recently discovered the power of story.

In the image below, you'll see the work that he's done on his model for the last few months.

Beautiful, wonderful work.

But it wasn't...

Interview with Jon Foster

interview jon foster Mar 15, 2018

On Tuesday, Ryan Kingslien and Jon Foster sat down for a conversation, artist to artist:

Ryan Kingslien

So tell me about your education, because you're spanning the 2D and 3D. And you've been at this game for a bit, so talk to me about your education, like where did you go to school, where did you get started?

Jon Foster

I went to ... Well I didn't go to art school right away. I wasn't a very good high school student and I didn't know what I wanted to do, and so I did go to a local college after graduating high school. But after a year and a half without any real direction I left. I was still living at home with my father and he's a military man, he says, "That's fine but you gotta get a full time job and pay a little rent." Which wasn't anything terrible. So worked full time for a year and thought about what I wanted to do, and reapplied to schools.

So I reapplied and decided that I wanted to go to art school. I'd always liked art but I wasn't the art kid in high school, and...
